Movie Review --- Mulan
Watched Mulan with my siblings at Golden Screen Cinema, Pavilion.
The film basically narrated the story of an ordinary village girl, Hua Mulan, who eventually became one of the most respectable and admirable warriors in our Chinese history.
Of course, since it's a commercial film, the director, Jingle Ma, who is more famous for producing romantic comedies, had also added several scenes that depicted the love story between Hua Mulan and the general, Wen Tai.
Mulan first met Wen Tai at the military camp when she was feeding her horse, Black Wind. And they came up with this hilarious "horse jokes", which made me burst into laughter. ^0^
Few days later, Wen Tai realised that Mulan was actually a woman in disguise. They also had had a great fight in the hot spring.
Mulan soon developed a crush on Wen Tai. But she did know that she was still on a mission --- to fight against the Rourans and protect the Wei's territory. Especially after Wen Tai's sudden death in the battlefield, her responsibilities and duties became greater.
Albeit she was upset over his death and couldn't bear to lose such a good partner, Mulan knew that she had to stay strong to train and command the armies. She couldn't bear to lose any of her comrades-in-arms anymore!!
Mulan began her attack against the Rourans and their Chanyu (something like leader), the evil Mendu. However, during the war, her big plan was ruined by a wind storm and she was shot by arrows and got injured.

Devastated, Wen Tai popped out to look for her. So obviously, Wen Tai's death was fake. He asked Mulan's childhood playmate, Xiao Hu to spread the news of his death, in wanting to boost Mulan's and other soldiers' morale, and make her a braver person. Mulan, of course was glad that he's still alive.
Without wasting much time, they quickly headed back to get Mulan medicine.
Meanwhile, Xiao Hu, along with other injured soldiers, fought to their last breath. Although they were caught as prisoners of war and being tortured, they died honourably.
And to make things worse, the cowardly head general had betrayed them. He did not send backup armies , food supply and medicine to them.
Wen Tai had no other way but to treat Mulan himself.
.

In fact, Mulan's one was far more simple, yet unforgettable. It just happened so naturally. Just like a glass of water, it may be tasteless, yet you would never stop yourself from drinking it.

Wen Tai had no other way but to treat Mulan himself.
As there were limited food and water supply and they were all stuck, Wen Tai cut his hand to feed Mulan his blood.
.
.
Desperated, Wen Tai decided to make himself the Rourans' prisoner of war. He revealed his real identity as the seventh prince of the Wei's Emperor and followed Mendu back to their military camp, with one condition --- Leave all the food and medicine they had for the Wei's armies. Mendu thought it was a great deal, and a golden opportunity to extort the Emperor of Wei, so he eventually agreed.

Back to Rouran's place. Mendu's sister, the Rouran's princess wanted to marry Wen Tai to become the Queen of Wei, as it's the only way to stop the war between Wei and Rouran. Mendu strongly disagreed and the princess could do nothing about it though she was furious and loathed war.
.
At the same time, Mulan had quietly sneaked into the Rouran's military camp. Finally, she worked together with the Rouran's princess and the white Chanyu servant to kill Mendu and rescue Wen Tai.
.
.
All of them went back to Wei safely along with all the soldiers. Followed by the ruthless Mendu's death, this marked the end of his hegemony era and the 12-year-wars.

For the sake of peace and the Wei's empire, Mulan had chosen to sacrifice her love, by letting Wen Tai marry the Rouran's princess. She put her country before her love.
.
The ending part where Wen Tai hugged Mulan and eventually left her was actually rather sad. Guess they would never ever forget each other and those days they spent together fighting the Rourans.
.
Well, the story was brilliantly presented. Of course there were some flaws in there but I couldn't care more about that.

.
The character Hua Mulan was played by Vicki Zhao Wei. She really did an awesome job in portraying the strong, brave and determined character. Of course, there were times that she would feel helpless or miserable. She would cry and shed tears. She too, would fall for a guy and carve for love. Just like any other ordinary ladies out there.

At the same time, I would like to give the credit to Chen Kun, who played the general, Wen Tai. He doesn't just have the look, more importantly, he can act. And the scar on his face did make him look more manly. He was so protective of Mulan and had guided her all the way to clear the hurdles.
.
.
Jaycee Chan's portrayal of the funny and mischievous Xiao Hu was average. Indeed, it was the Korean American, Nicky Lee, who played Hu Kui stole his show. He was really almost unrecognisable in there!! And I was quite impressed with his acting, to be frank. Hu Jun also made me surprised that he could handle such a villainous role like Mendu.

Several scenes were quite heart-warming and honestly, I did feel touched.
.
.
To me, the love story between Mulan and Wen Tai was definitely one of the highlights of this film. It's totally different from those superficial and meaningless Taiwanese dramas, where the guy was born into a wealthy family and would always act cool in front of the girl; while the girl came from a rather poor family and had suffered from a cancer or whatever weird illnesses.
In fact, Mulan's one was far more simple, yet unforgettable. It just happened so naturally. Just like a glass of water, it may be tasteless, yet you would never stop yourself from drinking it.

You don't need lots of kissing scenes or shagging scenes to make a film romantic. In fact, sometimes the actors' eye contacts and interactions might have told you the whole story.
.
The movie taught us the importance of friendship, family, brotherhood, patriotism, determination and sacrifice. It also delivered an anti-war message, which I thought was fairly significant.
.
Male audiences might feel a bit disappointed after watching it. Why?? 'Cos I guess most of them who bought the ticket would expect to see more war scenes or how would Mulan present her war strategies and tactics, just like those which had been illustrated in the Art of War by Sun Tzu.
Anyway, it was still a quite interesting and great movie I would say. Since I'm a Chinese, an Asian, and most importantly, a female. =)

Yes Or No
If you like me, just say yes; if you don't, just forget about it.
Stop being dubious, 'cos that feeling sucks.
TOTALLY SUCKS!!
If you think playing hide-and-seek is fun, then you are ABSOLUTELY WRONG.
So please don't waste my time anymore.
I've lots of better things to do. Like cleaning up my messy bedroom, completing Mr Ferns' holiday homework, washing the toilets, screaming at random strangers on the street and bla bla bla.Which I don't really intend to do.
No second-guessing, please.
Make it quick to clear all my doubts and confusions.
Just a 'Yes' or a 'No'. Simple as that.
Thank you.
Lalalalala~~~
